Plenary on LGBTQ Scholarship
stef shuster is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Appalachian State University. Their research and course offerings in social medicine, gender, and organizations are united by an overarching interest in how evidence is a social artifact. In research, teaching, and social justice work, stef considers who constructs evidence, how evidence confers authority to individuals and groups, and how it is mobilized in medical fields and clinical encounters. In their most current research, stef examines the construction of evidence in transgender-based medicine to untangle (and undermine) the structures, histories, and interactions that perpetuate the marginalization of trans and nonbinary people in medical encounters.
